I purchased a 1876 rifle S/N 11*** with checkering on the stock. I believe that it's the orginal stock since the stock and the lower tang has the same number. Am I correct with this logic? Also, I received the factory letter from the Cody Musuem and it does not list my rifle as a deluxe. What's the difference between a checkered stock and a deluxe rifle on the 1876 rifles? Or do they list deluxe configuration on the factory letter?

The 1876 records are not totally complete, but its still worth having a factory letter IMO.... When I got mine, it listed very little about the features of the gun. If there is no mention made of a particular feature in the factory letter it could just mean that your gun was made with whatever the standard feature was. Like a 28" barrel on the 76'. A standard feature like barrel length or blued receiver wouldn't necessarily be mentioned, they might mention checkering, special sights, plating, engraving etc. Your stock and frame look to be a match, why not call Cody museum and see if they can get you a letter ?

As you can see, the factory records aren't complety complete. I am glad to hear that the facory records may be incomplete. Thank you very much for the feedback. I always want an old lever action rifle but to find my first 1876 rifle here in Japan is just crazy.

You actually have more information on your letter than mine has, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of information, but it is very old. There was a fire years ago that destroyed a lot of stuff, so maybe some of those files are gone for sure. The rifle I have is a third model, round barrel, nothing too fancy about it. It has been in my family since new, my great, great grandfather ordered it for his own Moose and Deer hunting rifle in 1884. I didn't really need the letter, but its nice to have it. I still hunt with my '76 occasionally, its an awesome working gun and really fun to shoot.

Nice to know the history of the gun and have a family hierloom. As soon as my 1876 gets out from the gunsmith, I plan on adding some history to my gun with some elk hunting.

I agree with Shooter.

And, knowing the history through family lineage is a super bonus. IMHO much better than a letter that list mostly what we already know about a piece.

About as close to museum condition as they get. A beautiful family heirloom to pass on.
