I have a Model 88 in 308...The stock has no checkering, I have done searches and have never found any other 88;s without checkering. has anyone seen any and was it a low end model and is it rare? The serial 116*** MADE around 1960

It is not rare or scarce...just bing search Winchester Model 88 images and you will see...

Model 88's and 100's both had some problems with their stocks cracking and breaking, the stocks are very thin in some places. I'd say there are 2 likely possibilities....an aftermarket replacement stock if there's no checkering, or the checkering was removed if your stock was refinished. There are plenty of 88's that aren't wearing their original furniture... All Winchester 88's had factory checkering except the carbines. Pre 64 models were hand cut diamond checkering, post 64's were impressed basket weave checkering with an oak leaf design. Maybe post up a picture or two, it might help us determine if its an original or aftermarket....

Old post, but I finally got the 3 of them together in a pic. My choice to carry deer hunting is the carbine, but I still can't part with the others.

Top - Carbine
Middle - Pre-64 with hand cut checkering
Bottom - Post 64 with impressed basket weave & oak leaf design checkering

Nice set. These models are not familiar to me as I don't hunt. I'm accustomed to seeing the cowboy type Winchester levers. Thanks for posting.

Realize I am late for the party. But that carbine sure looks mighty handy skinner! All rifles worthy of keeping on hand!

Wow! Trying to find a carbine in either the Model 88 or 100 is much akin to trying to find hen's teeth! And the ones that are available are pricey!

My .308 has no checkering because it is a replacement stock that was custom made.
