I've always had handguns, but I just acquired a Win. model 100/308. I got two clips with it (BOTH WINCHESTER CLIPS) I've had it several months now and just took it out to fire it. What i'd like to know is what is the difference in clips. One says 284 and the other isn't stamped. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE between the 308/243 and the 284 clips ?????

Yes, the .284 clip is different. The .308/.243 stamped clips are the ones you want. A .284 clip for a model 100 or 88 is worth big bucks to sell or trade if its still in good condition provided the feed lips have not been bent or modified. (You should be able to get 2 of the ones you need for the .284 clip.) I have a model 100 in .284, and I paid over $100 for the last spare clip I bought, .308 clips are usually around $40 -$50.

After I took the rifle and tried it out I noticed it had the 284 clip in it and seemed to work fine. The clip that is unmarked worked fine but won't hold the bolt back when empty. The 284 clip was in it when I bought the gun from the wife of a old gunsmith that died ( it was his personal rifle). Both clips say Winchester on them. It's a great looking gun for a 1961 model. Bluing is 100% and stock is 95%. The 284 clip is in perfect condition the unmarked one has most of the bluing worn off..

The model 100 and 88 magazines are "model specific" but interchangeable to a point. The original's have the model number marked on the follower. Model 88 Mags cycle fine in the 100's but won't hold the action open after the last shot. The .284 cartridge is fatter and has a steeper shoulder angle so without altering the feed lips on the magazine, it shouldn't work too well in your .308. Maybe yours has been modified to work with the .308 ??

Very confusing. The one that I have that's stamped M-100 / 284 doesn't look like anyone has touched it. all edges have the bluing on them, no tool marks. Hardly looks like it's been used ,looks new. The one that's on the left in the picture looks just like my unstamped one That one is very used. I think I'll put the 284 clip away and order one that says M-100 308/243 and see what I get. Sportsman's Guide has the .243/.308 magazines for $36.98 last time I checked. Wisner's supplies Nu Line Guns (the company that does most of the firing pin recall work) with re-engineered magazines for around $49 bucks.

Don't fall prey to the gouging ebayers and others that are selling them for outrageous prices of up to 100 or more! Trust me, I've been scouring the internet and speaking to "live" representatives- there are cheaper alternatives at least in the .243/.308 calibers. I know that Winchester didn't make them- but if they work- who cares?

Just so we understand magazines and clips. Magazines have springs. Clips do not. The M1 carbine accommodates magazines. The M1 Garand accommodates clips.

Now Duct/Duck tape. Although it is used in duct work.

Duct tape was originally named “Duck” tape and originally only came in green, not silver.

Duck tape was originally invented by Johnson & Johnson’s Permacel division during WWII for the military. The military specifically needed a waterproof tape that could be used to keep moisture out of ammunition cases. This is why the originally Duck tape came only in army green.

While on this subject, I have a spare magazine that takes three 308 rounds and feeds them through my M100 satisfactorily, but looks quite different to the original.
With a previous post I endeavoured to attach a photo, defeated and still left scared (May require tuition).
I will try and describe it.
Appears to be quite old and made from "Real thick steel" the bottom of the magazine is flat and extends slightly past the sides of the body.
It sits further into the stock of the rifle, though it still ejects readily.
Does not hold the bolt back when empty.
Makes a good spare magazine, just wondering what it may originally come from ?

Just found a 20 round mag from my old ex service SLR (FAL L1A1) which I had totally forgotten about.
And guess what ?! I think with a bit of filing it could readily be made to fit a 308 Winchester 100.
Top round lifts to a similar position and angle, the magazine cross section is the same width and length. Different mounting and locking system though, but no welding required, only filing.
I'm not inclined to do the modification as plenty of buddies will jump through hoops to get their hands on an original un-shortened mag.
Also the FAL weighed 10lb and with another few pounds rattling around underneath it just brings back bad memories.
