I don't remember where I found this, but I thought it might be helpful to somebody. I found it while reading up on the coned breech...wanted to know if it was as much of a weakness as it is sometimes made out to be.
In my opinion its not weak at all...the Rem 700 is stronger around the case head, without question...but the Model 70 isn't weak there. Some folks talk about it like its a Glock chamber or something. The case is fully supported, its just not wrapped in steel like it is in the Rem 700... My conclusion...its plenty strong enough.

The main differences that stick out to me are the cone breeching, the resulting angle that the bolt head has to make (resulting in a little less metal around the case head), and the recoil lug location and size. From a reliability standpoint it seems like the cone breech is a good tradeoff, from just looking at the thing, to me.
I think the old Springfield 1903 was supposed to have a coned breech, too, I've never really inspected one with an eye for that. |
