too much trigger free play in a 1971 30-30

I just bought a win 94, 1971 NRA edition, and the trigger has a half inch of free play when at full cock . Is this normal for this model ? I bought it cheap because the guy thought it was broken and didn't know how to fix it. I have taken it apart and didn't see any problem or anywhere a spring was missing. I have read posts and talked to a few people and it sounds to be the quirks of the gun to me. One person I talked to said he has drilled the trigger and added a spring to hold tension on the trigger . Are there any opinions on this ?

And where can I find a diagram for this gun?
