Can anyone help with this number?

My boss came across this model 94 for sale, and bought it pretty cheap. After looking it over we found a number stamped on it that we are unsure of what it means. The serial number brings it out to being from 1940. But there is a 5 stamped under the lever right in front of the trigger. Can anyone explain what this is?

Probably an inspectors mark.

Possibly an armory stamp?

Either could be, just trying to see if anyone knows for sure. One person who looked at it seemed to think it could possibly be a stamp meaning it was the 5th one produced for that year?

That would be incorporated in the serial number not a replaceable part, I would think. All you can expect is speculation unless the guy who stamped it chimes in. I doubt it was a factory stamp.

It doesn't look like any style of stamp that the factory used. They didn't stamp any "produced for that year" stamp on their guns. They kept track of how many were produced each year by the serial numbers. I am starting to think an armory stamp is getting close or the guy who originally bought it copuld have stamped that on it for any reason at all.
