Did Winchester drill, tap, and plug (two holes horizontal) on the left upper side of the receiver back in the mid to late fifties? My 94 serial number 2,222,xxx has them and looks very original. Does not appear that anything was ever mounted. If so, when did Winchester start doing it? Guessing the holes are for an optional peep sight.

Don't know exactly when but they started coming from the factory drilled and taped for receiver sights during or after 1951. Some that came from the factory special order or production had them with receiver sights mounted from the factory before that time. But all had the holes after whatever date after 51.
