Win 94 Questions

So I just inherited a m94 from an uncle. He has passed away so I obviously can't get any info from him. His widow thinks it might have belonged to my great grandfather. Any how, I think it's from about 1896ish. Barrel seems to be about 22-24 inch octagonal. See pics. It's marked 30 WCF on the top of the barrel. On the left side it says "Nickel Steel Barrel. Especially for Smokeless Powder". Serial # 4xxxx. Over all it seems to be in pretty good shape. Bore looks surprisingly good. Action is smooth. Not much blue left, but no pitting. Wood looks OK. Some dings, no cracks.
So the questions are:
When was it made?
What is it worth?
Is it safe to shoot?
Please keep in mind that I don't intend to shoot or sell this rifle. I'm just curious.

Great lookin gun!
Without the complete number its hard to pinpoint. 49999 is 1898..
My suggestion is contact the Cody Museum, spend the spare change and get a letter on it. The barrel is possibly a special order length and makes the gun worth more. Dont try to refinish or fix anything untill you get the letter and apprasal.

not sure if correct place first time on sight. My next purchase is going to be a Pre 64 1894!What year/model did Winchester start to install front loop on front sight?.

30 WCF is the forerunner of the 30-30. Whether an 1896 gun is ready for today's smokeless powder pressures or not is beyond my realm of knowledge. I reload, so my making rounds that are low on the Mfg's chart of published data would not be a problem. Start low and work up. Clean her barrel well first though to assure no rough spots, pitting, rust, or obstructions. Maybe even shoot lead bullets rather than jacketed. Lead bullets are work horses under 2000 fps but I could never really get my 30-30 to shoot jacketed much faster than 1950 fps within Mfg published loads. I like Win 748 and a 150 grain jacketed or cast bullet in the 30-30.
