I was at Cabelas yesterday looking through the inventory of used guns. Ran across a pre-1964 model .30-30 that really sparked my interest. What I want to know is when did Winchester drop the .30 WCF stamp on the barrel of the model 94s? My good friend has a 1953 model .30-30 that is stamped with .30-30 on the barrel. And lastly seeing as how I am in the market for a pre-1964 .30-30 is $600 a fair price or should I really have it inspected for wear prior to purchase?

This is a SWAG from Robert C. Renneberg's "The Winchester Model 94 The First 100 Hundred Years" reference book. Robert indicates the change was somewhere between serials 1,250.000 to 2,000.000. However, Winchester factory records indicate no numbers in the range of 1943-47 are available for YOM dates. Picks up at 1948 serial 1,500.000. The 2,000.000 range begins with 1953. Perhaps other members have access to a more precise listing.

Old thread, but this might help. Or not.

My 1951 Model 94 (s/n 1747xxx) is marked "- Model 94 - 30-30 Win -" on the left side below the rear sight and in front of the receiver.

However. The underside of the barrel above the magazine tube is stamped "30 WCF". It can't be seen with the magazine tube in place, but I noticed it because I took the gun apart to refinish the stock.

So, technically, it's marked with both.
