So had a rekindling interest in the old family hand down 38-55. Accurate, perfect function just would like to clean it up without wrecking it, sometimes entertain restoring it since I'll never sell it.... serial # just above the 11K mark with 26" round barrel.

Stuck in camp till Tuesday but getting the wife to send up some more pics besides the only one I have on my phone. I take it these where as common as white bread so is restoration truly a no no or just do it and enjoy a nice old whitetail rig that has a lot of family history?

Here is a few more..... it is a tight gun, but the finish has seen it's day. I kinda like the plum brown patina but a nice deep blue job and refinished wood has its appeal!

I myself wouldn't refinish it...but it's your rifle.

Looks good to me. Survived quiet well for a working man's tool.

Some light work with a Smith pad and silicon cloth will add some luster to metal. Applying McGuire's Scratch-X to the wood will eye candy it and fill shallow rubs.

I'd keep it just as it is. And what appear to be scratches in the receiver aren't. That's the way they all came from Winchester around the turn of the 19th century. Love the round barrel sporting rifles!

ONLY thing I'd do is Simoniz her! That will bring the furniture out nicely and can't hurt the blue/metal!

Thanks for the tips!! My tired old memory was playing tricks on me with the serial number, most likely because we are drilling in -45 temps right now..... 82112 is what it truly is, but hey - there was an 11 in there!!

Where does that land this rig? Early 1897 if I'm not mistaken? Had a fun open sight only day today, no optics allowed... snow stops tomorrow and chasing the last few days of Whitey season commences!

Your 82112 is early middle year of 1897 Ol Deuce
