What, if any are the differences? Ballistically, I couldn't see much of a difference. Less bullet drop from the 300 WSM, if anything (looking at 180 gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertip rounds).

Little less recoil from the wsm. I prefer the wsm as ammo is available most places but doesn't sell out as fast as the win mag when ammo gets scarce. Ammo costs more but how much are you gonna shoot it? Just my $.02.

I prefer the Win mag. I've had both and the WSM is simply more trouble than it's worth for me.

If you shoot longer heavier bullets the WSM gives up too much case capacity. The Win Mag is also more reliable feeding from the magazine.

You still need more than two feet of barrel to get the good out of the cartridge, so the short action ain't of any real benefit.

The WSM are simply the latest, but not the greatest. I'll take the 300 Win every time.
