This is my first post here but there is a wealth of information on this forum so I'm sure I'll spend a lot of time here.

I found this gun at a local pawn shop and really like it but am hesitant to spend this much $ on a gun that may be a fake. The serial number confirms it to be a 1968 model as does the bolt handle. My biggest concern is the trigger. I have never seen such a wide trigger on a Winchester before. It is very crisp and feels great but is it original? Any input would be appreciated. Micah

Since no one else has chimed in, I'll give my two cents.

The trigger likely is an aftermarket one, but the original Model 70 trigger ain't difficult to replace, serial numbered, or hard to come by.

Things I guess have changed, but I can't imagine anyone faking any Winchester from that era. The post 64, especially ones made just after the redesign have never been highly sought after in my area.

Again, this is just my assessment of its collectability and likelihood of being a fake.

Thanks for the input. I have figured out that the trigger is actually a shoe so there is a good possibility that the trigger is original.

This particular gun is rare. Maybe not as valuable as a pre-64 but still rare. Only 2400 mannlichers ever made. Most in 30-06. This is a 308, of which only 218 +/- were produced. Approximately 1/2 of those are in europe. Also, this is a 68 which is the only year the bolt handle was smooth. After some research I found that some people put mannlichers on their mod 70's for whatever reason. Naturally if that was the case here, the value would go from $1,500+ to half that. Just want to do my research before I spend that kind of dough.

I appreciate any knowledgeable input.

From the pics, it appears to be in exceptional condition.

I haven't fooled with the collectible Winchester or any other brand for that matter in quite a few years.

Markets and taste change, that's why I waited, and was up front about my opinion.

I remember buying and selling pre 64 94's for less than $200.00, model 70's in the $700.00 range.

I wish I had stuck with a few of them now. Good luck with your research. CD
