Which model 70 do I have? Looking to buy a model 70 from a family member and wondering what it is. I think it's a Deluxe or XTR. It has a Monte Carlo stock with cheek piece and an ebony forearm end with checkering. It's a 243 cal with a blued 22 inch barrel and is not drilled or tapped for sights. It does have a jeweled bolt and a hinged floor plate. The serial number is G1227486. Thanks for the help.

According to the serial number you have provided its a 1976 mfg. There are a few models from this time that would fit the description. Maybe if you could post a few pictures it might help determine what it is.

What do you think it's worth? It is still in the original box and has never been fired. Manuals aren't in box.
The barrel has been drilled and tapped, the sites were put on,didnt come on it new. Do you think putting the sites on it has hurt the value.

It might be worth a bit less with the sights added. The new in box price for a 1976 mfg. (non supergrade) ranges from $450-$750 depending upon the specific model, features and caliber. Is there and indication on the box end as to what model this might be?

I'm going to go with my first thought..probably a model 70 standard...I have one almost identical from 1972 in .222 rem. Model 70 standards should have had sights from the factory. Are you sure these were added later? They look correct for factory installed williams sights to me ??

Here's a couple of pics of the .222 ramp sight and forend. I'm quite sure this one of mine is a standard model, trhey are sometimes referred to as "sporters". Mine has no cheekpiece, but looks very similar other than that.

I'm sure it did not come with open sights. My uncle said he took it to a gun smith after he bought it to have them put on. It does look just like yours. I bought a gun digest book of guns and prices and it says the standard grade was manufactured between 1964 and 1971.

Well ...mine is a supposed to be 1972 by checking the serial number, there's so much conflicting information for production dates and features and model names between references its hard to know what to believe. Maybe check out what they say in your book about the sporter model, some sources say they are the same as standard yours may list something different. It seems weird that it had no sights with that length barrel. Sporters and standards have the black forend, I'm not sure what others had the same stock?? Maybe someone who knows these better will chime in and help us both figure out what we have for certain....
