I own a Winchester 70 and was hoping for some insight as to rarity and value. The rifle is in 117,000 serial range. Caliber is 270WCF. Barrel is a factory Winchester marked, 24" long and is just less than the diameter of a nickel. Scope is an early Lyman Super Target Spot. Bench rest stock appears to be original to the rifle.

I can't seem to find any others like it in the usual places, gunbroker, arms int, etc. Also can't seem to find anything in the blue book. My only thought is it is a factory ordered 270wcf cal. target model, but how would i know for sure.

Any info on history, rarity or value would be greatly appreciated.

For the serial range, your nice rifle is an early postwar model produced in 1949. It is a "Target" Model with a target style stock and the various small accoutrements of the model. From what I can see, it appears to be original. Your rifle is unlike the rifles of reference in the Internet referral in the post above and therefore the comparisons are not well taken.

I wouldn't want to hazard a guess concerning value. Too many variables and without a personal inspection, quite difficult to estimate. I would note that these Target Models are rarer and more valuable than the comparable standard model. Also, the 270 Win chambering is less common in these than the mainstay 30-06 round.

These Target Model rifles fall heavily within the collector realm and that considerably more so than the standard pre-64 Model 70 which even beyond restoration, lends its action well to custom guns. In yours the value is likely greatest in its present model configuration. So originality as well as condition play considerable roles in establishing value.

Probably step one for you should be taking a moment just to congratulate yourself on a nice rifle!

I was in Korea with the 1st Marine Division. Seems our 2 snipers carried a "70" with a long scope and sling.

You can do a search to determine if one is up for sale, or you come up empty. Besides that, there's the "Blue Book" which is pretty expensive.
