I am going to build a custom rifle on a Pre-64 model 70 action that I have. I am going to use a Krieger barrel. I am wanting to build a nice hunting rifle chambered in .284 winchester. I am using a 30-06 donor action so I shouldn't have any feeding problems. My question is what would you guys recommend for barrel length for the 284 and contour. I am thinking a 24 inch barrel with 1/10 twist rate but am I going to gain much with a 24 over a 22? What about contour, featherweight, light sporter or medium sporter? Thanks for the input.

BTW...I would prefer the longer 24 inch barrel...mostly for hunting.

Sounds like a great project. I had a .284 in a model 100, and as you probably already know, the length of the action limits bullet selection if you want to seat it out far enough to touch the rifling.. Your 30-06 action shouldn't have this issue, you can probably make a very nice tack driver out of it. Keep us posted with your progress.
