One of the more popular Winchester rifles which was discontinued is the Winchester 9422. Recently when I asked about .22 lever actions I was told in "either .22LR or .22 magnum you would be well advised to get a Winchester 9422. They are the most revered, effective, and best shooters". This was at the largest rifle retailer in the whole USA. Checking around I found for lever action .22s it was probably THE WAY TO GO. Then I tracked sales of that rifle in .22LR and .22magnum. The sale prices for used rifles was high but they were selling and highly rated by all.

I asked Winchester Why not reintroduce the 9422. They said it would not be able to make one at a price people would pay and that other arms company have jumped into that void so big time it would not be a good way for Winchester to go. I also made a very extensive check of lever action bigger calibers and still there the Winchesters were highly rated and considered quite expensive. But as soon as a rifle by all other competitors reached Winchester like quality the price was equal to a new Winchester. I looked at and Shot everything from Henrys to Rossi to Uberti and even out of my way to check out Turnbull, Navy Arms, Cimmaron, to name a few.....Still I seemed to get referred back to Winchester's, either used or new. And every check of .22LR and .22 magnum seemed to end with "Get a Winchester 9422!" I do own a .22LR Winchester 9422 I bought in 1973 and I knew how great that rifle is. But now they aren't even serviceable in Arnold, Missouri??

The Winchester site lists two companies which service the 9422s. Maybe that is just as good but it does show how far Winchester has rolled back form the glorious days of the 9422. And despite the fact that WInchester seems to think their is no sense of them making a new 9422 the two caliber lever actions that get shot the most is .22LR and ..22 magnum according to the sources I checked. .22LR I am sure is by far the leader. But the same sources list the .22 magnum at 10% of the volume of .22LR.

I have a 1977 Winchester 9422M. I like the looks and feel of this masterpiece. No cross-bolt or tang safety. No checkering.

I also own 3 of these rifles, a 1972 Mfg. .22 S,L, &LR, a 1984 Mfg. .22 Magnum XTR, and a 2003 mfg. 9417. Both of my .22's have fired thousands of rounds with absolutely no issues, and the 9417 (.17 HMR) that I acquired around 2 years ago has also had plenty of use without problems of any kind. I perform regular takedown cleanings after each use, (requires the removal of only one receiver screw) which allows you access to the bolt, trigger group and all moving parts. I have never had an issue with fail to feed, fire or extract etc. on any of my three rifles, so I wouldn't be too concerned about service. I don't think you can go wrong with a 9422, they are a high quality rifle made from all metal parts. The 9422 and 9417 both have extremely smooth cycling actions and will give you many years of trouble free service and enjoyment in my experience.

Skinnerr, thanks for the pic share. Very nice Winchesters. The scope......I suspect it brings distant things face-to-face.

Also have a 2003 Winchester 9410 Ranger NIB. I care more for the uniqueness than actually firing.

To Red Ryder and Skinner T: I am so happy with my 9422 1973 Winchester. Currently it has a small extreme red dot sight on it and I can hit a target at up to 50 yards very quickly but if I take off the red dot I find it tougher to shoot like that. Like Red Ryder's mine has no checkering. If I buy another (I probably will!) I would TRY to get a 9422 one of 9422 checkered straight grip 9422M. My stock on the 9422 is wonderfully figured and LEGEND has it that when they first were producing this rifle they were built in the custom shop. Winchester told me that directly when I visited the plant in 1973. I was planning on getting a custom Model 70. What do you guys think of the 9422 Tribute rifles which they made 9422 of them???

I was absolutely impressed that every dealer I talked to who are currently selling 22 lever actions (both .22LR and .22magnum that all current rifles are NOT equal to the 9422. I was so surprised that dealers with rifles to sell on their shelves would tell me pretty quickly that I should get a 9422 since it was apparent I really cared. I had a Henry 3rd limited Edition Golden Boy .22LR in my hands and several customers said "Wow!. Nice stock!, really fancy! but you'd be better to find a 9422 Winchester!" I have never even seen a 9422 tribute. Guns International dealers list a few and they are ranging from about $1,290 to well over $2,900.

I should find out what the 9410 is. I do not ever remember running across one.

DaveyJ, thanks for your personal backstory and the brief narrative toward gun store 9422 attitude.

The 9422 is as smooth as a Henry and of much better quality. Of course, Winchester cannot retail a 9422 even close to the Henry price. I have a Henry 2012 Frontier 22 that is excellent for the price. Nice wood, smooth cycling and accurate from the box.

Now the 9410.....more a novelty piece than a serious shooter. However, I adore the 9410 for its uniqueness and functionally.

I see the 9410 is a 9422 type Winchester with .410 caliber. I have .20guage serious doubles, am interested in .28 but don't own one, Owned a .410 beautiful Spanish built double, a Richland. My ex owns that now in Montana. I miss her a lot. She is still a stunningly attractive woman with a lot of talent. She is also one of the best shots i have ever seen.I miss the .410 double much less.....

The ex sounds like a great woman! The 94-22 was a great rifle and those who still own one are very lucky! The sale price of them is almost minimum $1000 or a lot more!
