Actually, I was squirrel hunting in the woods near my home. I was on a stalk after a big fox squirrel and lost site of him. I sat down on a nice comfortable fallen log and heard something coming behind me through a thicket. I turned around and locked eyes with the coyote from about 15 or 20 feet. He turned and started moving away and I nailed him. It's funny because earlier I heard the most unearthly howling from nearby. I thought that it was either someones beagle with a very sore throat, or maybe a dinosaur even ( it sounded that weird) or a coyote. Well 15 minutes after that me and the adult female coyote were staring eachother down.

Amazing what a load of #6's can do isn't it?

It was a reawakening to the fact that a shotgun, even a 20 gauge, is very capable, especially with high brass #6. With a modified choke in a Model 12, I've heard it said that it will actually pattern a bit tighter with modern shotshells. But the yote was inside of 25 yards when I shot it the first time so it caught a fair ammount of the shot.

I call them woods rats. That's how many of them we have around here. Having a chicken farm I am sure you know how much that picture makes me happy.

You know, the truth is that I really hated shooting it, but they have been a menace of sorts down here in Louisiana. Especially to young rabbits, and of all things, pet cats. I've heard that coyotes really love to kill and eat cats. They will also not hesitate to kill smaller dogs. But I have to say that it was a beautiful animal, very healthy. The way it stopped in it's tracks and looked at me was something I'll long remember. It reminded me of a squirrel hunt I went on last season very near to where I shot the coyote, when an otter, of all things, walked across a trail I was on about 15 yards in front of me. It never even knew I was there. It was really cool to watch him walk on by and disappear into the woods, obviosly heading for a canal that was about half a mile away.
