I'll begin with a greeting from Vancouver Island and a photo of one of my pre-64 Model 70's. A 1953 300 H&H. This one's in excellent condition.

Very nice gun; I love the wood finish. The Model 70 is on my near future gun list. What do you use it for? Would you recommend getting a new model 70 or a pre 64 Model 70?

This M70 I bought around 20 years ago off the original owner and have taken it on a number of hunts. I new what I had and always gave it the best of care. This 300 H&H is a very nice shooting rifle that consistantly holds a tight group. The 300 H&H cartridge, with the long tapered case goes thru the action, of this old M70, like a hot knife thru butter.
I own quite a few of these pre-64 M70's and a M54 in varing models and calibers. It's great that the control round feed M70 is once again available in a new Winchester Rifle and would be my rifle of choice if I were to buy a brand new one. I've shot and handled quite a few different brands and models of rifles but I still prefer the pre-64 M70 over any of the others. There's beauty in simplicity . . |

i might have to look into getting myself a pre-64 M70. i am looking to get myself a new hunting rifle for the fall, and im set on getting the Model 70. just not sure of the what one. Do you know what they normally go for?

Your area of residence does have some bearing on the price but a decent pre-64 M70 is still a great bargain. The rarer the caliber and model the higher the price; but 3 major factors usually determine the price:
1. - rarity 2. - originality 3. - condition . . . factor this into the area, the demand and the state of the economy equals selling price. |

Nice rifle. How's the recoil with the steel butt plate and downward sloping comb? Think the .300 H & H magnum deserves a big come back.
