Thanks guys, I'm not sure I will ever have the resources to own a pre-64 as rough ones run about $900 round these parts. I've been a firm believer that the post 64 model 70s are some of the best bang for the buck in used rifles out there. The quality is far above any of the current budget brands and the prices are comparable. With just a bit of tinkering the rifle will shoot as well as any other 7 lb sporting rifle. I found this particular rifle likes a load of 46.9 grains of 4895 under a 168 grain bullet about 4 grains under max, and the pressure bedding was moved back from the forend tip to about halfway back to the receiver.

Much as I am a huge fan of the new Model 70's and CRF, the rifles from the vintage you have will always have a special place in my heart as it takes me back to getting out of high school and hunting elk for the first time.
