Can any 1894 experts chime in with their opinion as to if this gun came from Winchester this way? Can anyone confirm if this is a real 1894 Short Rifle? Were there any short rifles made with the 9 3/8" forearm? This is the short rifle. That has been the accepted name from the introduction. Carbines had barrel bands. I personally avoid carbines although I have a 9422 1970 built (New Haven Custom Shop) with a fancy stock and that has the barrel band and I am not aware that the 9422 came any other way. To get back to your rife this is the rifle as it came from Winchester with apparently two modifications. The Tang rear peep sight and the front sight seem to be after market. I have gone way out of my way to look at as many older 1894 to 1910 '94 Winchesters as possible. This short rifle was I believe one of the first that came that way. The fore end cap this on has is the best set up for a '94 whether it is a short rifle, sporter or a long rifle. It looks like it is in nice shape!

The stud swivel slings were also after market. Whoever set this up the way it is now really knew what he was doing! A very nice rig! Also in a very useful cartridge, but getting pretty hard to find, at least compared to 30-30. This might be one of the most practical early date hunting rifles I have seen. The three mods my guess were done AFTER 1930.....maybe even after 1940. What is the total weight of this beauty? i know your post was done awhile back....

A very desirable early short rifle. Could be predecessor to the trapper? My first time to see a 32 special mentioned.

Too bad we may not hear from him. Seems like a really desirable rifle. I would have been greatly interested in the weight of that rifle. A currently produced Miroku Short Rifle would weigh in at 6 3/4 pounds. Yet this one has a curved steel butt plate. I am certain the swing stud swivels were added. The tang peep sight might have been added quite a while ago. I have checked every old Winchester reference I could find. There aren't those many of those......The 32 Win. Spl caliber was made quite a bit in that era according to Jack O'Connors's books. Any 1906 produced Winchester '94 would come with a curved buttplate from what I know. Add checkering to this and it would be what I would want, although the weight of the older rifles I have put on postal scales have come in very high compared to newer models. As a collector item the older models always seem to carry a higher asking price. A place like Kittery Trading post who resells these rifles though seem to look primarily at current using value as a shooter seeming to be after what I am after.
